Seychelles Island Hopping: Mahé, Praslin and La Digue

Seychelles Island Hopping: Mahé, Praslin and La Digue

A Seychelles island hopping itinerary should be built around confirmed transport and enough nights on each base. Mahé, Praslin and La Digue can all be part of one holiday, but visiting three islands does not necessarily mean sleeping on all three.

For a first trip, compare a two-base holiday with a three-base alternative. The better plan depends on your available nights, luggage, arrival time and preferred pace.

Understand the connections

The official Seychelles transport guide describes ferry connections among the principal islands and air connections between Mahé and Praslin. Verify actual schedules, check-in requirements and ticket conditions with the operator before confirming hotels.

Include road transfers to and from each terminal. A ferry ticket does not take you from the hotel to the harbour, and the sailing duration is not the full hotel-to-hotel journey. Ask how luggage is handled and whether any baggage fees apply.

Choose two bases or three

Structure Why consider it? Trade-off
Mahé and Praslin, with La Digue as a day visit Fewer hotel changes The day visit follows outward and return transport
Mahé, Praslin and La Digue overnight stays More evening and morning time on each island Another checkout and luggage transfer
One main island with selected excursions Simpler short holiday Less time for independent exploration elsewhere

A suggested eight-day framework

For seven hotel nights, one possible arrangement is three nights on Mahé, two on Praslin, one on La Digue and a final night on Mahé. Treat this as a planning framework, not a fixed transport schedule. If six hotel nights or less are available, start by comparing a two-base version.

Use the arrival day for settling in, then give Mahé an unhurried day before moving. On Praslin, separate the transfer day from the main sightseeing day. For La Digue, decide whether an overnight stay offers enough additional value to justify moving the luggage.

Keep the final night’s location aligned with the international departure. A last-night stay on Mahé can reduce dependence on an island transfer immediately before the flight, although it does not remove disruption risk.

Give each island a purpose

The tourism board’s main inner islands overview helps identify their different settings. Build a shortlist of experiences rather than repeating a beach-and-hotel day on every base.

If an excursion or beach is essential, check how you reach it from the exact hotel and whether access needs advance arrangements. A small island does not mean every visit is effortless for every traveller. Confirm practical options for children, large luggage and mobility requirements.

Leave room for sea conditions

Check the operator’s policy for delayed or cancelled sailings and understand which hotel or activity bookings depend on the connection. Avoid making a separate prepaid activity hinge on a very tight arrival.

Travellers concerned about motion should discuss the journey with the operator and an appropriate health professional where needed. A short published crossing time is not a guarantee of comfort or suitable conditions.

What the itinerary quotation should include

  • Named hotels and room categories for every night.
  • Each ferry or domestic flight, with class and baggage rules.
  • Road transfers at both ends of every connection.
  • Check-in and checkout timing on move days.
  • Admissions, local transport and any guided visits.
  • Cancellation terms for linked services and disruption support.

Check current entry and travel-authorisation requirements through the relevant official authority for every traveller before buying restrictive arrangements.
