Mauritius North, East or West Coast: Where Should You Stay?

Mauritius North, East or West Coast: Where Should You Stay?

Where to stay in Mauritius depends on the hotel experience and the visits you want most. The north, east and west offer different settings, but the exact property’s beach, access and facilities should decide the shortlist.

Coast comparison

Area Planning interest Check for your hotel
North Shopping, dining areas and northern island outings Actual access to town and the beach
East Lagoon settings and excursions towards offshore islands Beach orientation and current activity conditions
West and southwest Coastal stays with selected inland nature visits Distance to each booked excursion

The north: compare resort time with time outside

The tourism board’s north Mauritius guide describes shopping around Grand Baie and boat outings towards the northern islands. Choose the north when those experiences fit your interests, then check whether your proposed property is conveniently located for them.

A northern hotel can still be some distance from the restaurants or shopping you have in mind. Ask whether the route is walkable for your group, requires transport or involves an organised outing. Do not assume a broad area label means everything is on the doorstep.

The east: focus on the lagoon and your chosen resort

The official east coast overview highlights Belle Mare and excursions towards Île aux Cerfs. A hotel in this region can suit a stay centred on the resort and selected water-based outings.

Check current arrangements for boat departures, pickup and activity operation. If swimming or a particular watersport is the main reason for choosing the property, ask about the beach and activity area at that exact hotel. General regional descriptions cannot guarantee suitable conditions on your dates.

The west: connect the hotel to your nature plans

The west coast guide includes the southwest’s Le Morne setting and inland landscapes. Use the map to connect a hotel with the places you want to visit, then request actual door-to-door travel estimates from the provider.

Hiking, a viewpoint stop and a beach afternoon are different activities. Confirm the physical requirements, guiding and access of the visit you are booking. A photograph of a mountain does not mean a climb is included or suitable for every guest.

Season matters, but it is not a guarantee

Use the official seasonal weather information for context. Then consider the specific coast, beach orientation and your preferred activity. Avoid choosing from claims that one region is always dry, calm or wind-free.

If an important excursion depends on conditions, review its operating and cancellation policy before paying. Ask whether the programme has another practical day available rather than scheduling every outdoor experience back to back.

Compare rooms and meals alongside location

A suitable family room, accessible entrance or appropriate meal plan can outweigh a small location advantage. Compare exact room categories, child policies, restaurant inclusions and compulsory supplements. A hotel described as beachfront may have room categories set farther from the sand.

For a week, consider whether one hotel meets your priorities. Our seven-day Mauritius itinerary compares one base with a two-coast split. This location guide helps select the region; the itinerary guide helps distribute the nights.

What to send for a useful shortlist

  • Dates, number of nights and party details.
  • Whether beach rest or excursions take priority.
  • The three activities you most want.
  • Room, meal and mobility requirements.
  • Budget including airport and excursion transport.
